Balancing Educational Technology

As educators we have a large selection in the field of educational technology to use in the classroom. While technology has proven to be a game changer in education it is important to find that balance between the traditional approach to teaching and what we see today in using technology in the classroom. We must ensure as 21st century educators that we don't shy away from the newest technology such as the wide array of Apps, Gadgets, and educational hardware and software that is being introduced into our field.

I consider myself a little tech savvy but I have resisted embracing all the newest advancements in technology. Some of the latest advancements such as Remind, Google Drive, Google Classroom, and other resources found in Google Suite for Education have really allowed for communication with students and parents while also helping to ensure collaboration inside and outside of the classroom. I have learned so much in our Educational Technology course that has provided me with additional opportunities to become exposed to other resources and really allowing me to assess my own approach to technology not just as a teacher, but also as an aspiring leader in education.

It is important to see the expanding world of applications as tools to help strengthen curriculum and our approach to teaching. I don't consider the various Apps as replacements to what I already do in the classroom. It is important for educators to ease their way into incorporating what they feel comfortable using and what they believe will be beneficial for their students.

I welcome any thoughts you may have about educational technology or tips that will help others.

  1. I agree Derek! I love learning about all this technology that connects us with the students to learn together. I know the kids are ahead of me, but I love it when we can use technology together!

  2. Could not agree more. I still love the old fashioned, sit down and do math problems, approach in my class but I also use a lot of technology too. That balance can be found. I started using Remind this year for the first time and I enjoy the fact that my kids can communicate with me if they have any questions. I think it has allowed them to be more confident when trying to get help with their work.

  4. I like your idea about using technology to strengthen instruction and engagement and not as a replacement of valuable teacher instruction. There are so many ways to use technology in our classrooms to help make our instruction engaging. Today I learned how to use Google 360 to create a 360 photo or use other created photos and use VR glasses to "take" students to anywhere in the world! Soon we will be taking our 4th graders to Appomattox Courthouse when we finish our Civil War unit.

  5. Great blog! I agree that technology is a great balance. In my position as a Reading Specialist, I find that some feel online reading programs are just as effective as being face to face with a teacher. I feel that though technology can be such a great way to engage students and parents, there is no substitution for face to face interaction with a teacher. Being able to have real conversations with students and help them learn from their mistakes is invaluable.
